First Post

First off I'd like to say hello, and welcome to my blog. I'm hoping to be able to get some random people interested in this blog and this trip, but I'm also just hoping to provide a link for family and friends to stay up to date on my whereabouts while I'm traveling. Our official site can be found here: http://bikechile2009.com/ or you can select it from the links to the right. I urge you to please visit our site as it provides additional, more detailed information than I will provide here. We will most likely be updating the site with photos, blogs, and perhaps video.

Ok, so what is this trip? It's a journey a friend and I have laid out to take us through four South American countries, with the planned route taking us nearly 4,500 miles (7.242 km) from start to finish. There is however a catch. The catch being that we will be doing it all by bike (and when I say bike, I do in fact mean bicycle).

Our plan is to head to the southern tip of South America to the town of Ushuaia, Argentina. It is in fact the most southernmost town in the world. It lies approximately 600 miles (1.000 km) from mainland Antarctica and even closer to many small islands associated with Antarctica. From there we will bike north through Tierra del Fuego and Patagonia, eventually arriving in Santiago, Chile. Continuing North we will reach northern Chile and then travel east through the Andes, the second highest mountain range in the world, and into Bolivia. Here we will stop to visit Salar de Uyuni, the largest salt flat in the world at 4,085 square miles (10.582 square km) and then proceed to La Paz, Bolivia. From here we will travel into Peru, stopping to walk the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu and ultimately ending our journey in Lima, Peru.

Our departure date is set for January, 19th, 2009 and will arrive in Santiago on the 21st. Right now, we're gearing up, saving up, and psyching up for the nearing trip. We've been planning for so long it doesn't seem like it's finally here but we've got just over a month until we leave. Check back for continued updates and photos. Thanks so much.
